Today we finally got to kick off the Winter session of our ABLE Allstar Social and Play Skills groups! It was so great to welcome back ABLE alumni and meet some new friends this morning!
The focus for today was to get to know our Allstar friends and teachers as well as to review our Allstar expectations for the group. At The ABLEities Foundation, we are all about using visual supports to aid in communicating our verbal messages and always accompany our goals, topics and activities with a visual aid.
At the start of each class, we review our Allstar rules, practicing what it looks like to be an Allstar in group. When learners are observed to be an Allstar, they earn a ticket and lots of positive praise! Our students keep their tickets in a special ‘ticket pocket’ throughout the class. When it is time for us to say our goodbyes, each friend helps each other count their tickets and congratulates them on a job well done. If our Allstars earn 10 tickets, then earn a coveted trip to our treasure box!
As a warm-up activity to inspire creativity and fine motor skills, our Allstars molded their favorite items, such as foods and animals, out of playdoh. During the activity, we shared our creations, asked questions about our friend’s designs, and had fun being a little silly!
During our initial session, our class leaders observe our Allstar’s socialization, communication and play skills in order to develop goals for the remainder of our program. To observe our Allstars in action, we set up a fun game of “Yeti Spaghetti!” Our learners had so much fun pulling pieces of spaghetti out of the bowl in hopes of not knocking the Yeti over!
